An AI generates its answer based entirely on the words in your prompt plus the conversation so far. It has no access to your intentions, your files, or your context unless you provide them. This means a weak prompt forces the AI to guess, and guesses are generic.
A Concrete Example
Compare these two:
Weak: "Write about marketing."
Strong: "Write a 150-word introduction for a blog post aimed at small-business owners who are new to digital marketing. Use a friendly, encouraging tone and end with a question that invites them to keep reading."
The first forces the AI to guess audience, length, tone, and purpose — so you get something bland. The second hands it everything it needs to hit the target on the first try. Same model. The gap in quality comes entirely from the prompt.
The mindset shift that makes everything else click: you're not asking a question, you're giving a brief.
