The easiest way to understand MCP is the analogy its creators use: it's USB-C for AI.
Before USB, every device had its own connector — a different cable for your printer, your mouse, your camera. USB gave us one universal port: any device works with any computer. MCP does the same thing for AI. Instead of custom wiring between every model and every tool, there's one standard connector. Any AI app that "speaks MCP" can connect to any tool that "speaks MCP" — automatically.
A Concrete Example
MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in late 2024. It caught on fast: other major AI providers adopted it, and by 2026 the community had published hundreds of ready-made connectors for common tools. Because it's vendor-neutral, you can switch the AI model underneath — from one provider to another — without rewriting a single one of your tool integrations. The integration work is decoupled from which model you happen to use.
One standard connector, infinite combinations — that's the whole point of MCP.
