MCP — Connecting AI to Your Tools

Using MCP in Practice

Connecting Your First Tool

You don't have to build anything to start benefiting from MCP. The community has published hundreds of ready-made servers for common tools, so connecting your first one is often just configuration, not coding.

The typical flow: pick a host app that supports MCP, find an existing server for the tool you want (GitHub, Slack, Google Drive, Postgres, and many more have official or community servers), add it to your host's configuration, and authorize access. Once connected, the AI can discover and use that tool's capabilities immediately.

A Concrete Example

Reference servers for tools like GitHub, Slack, Google Drive, and Postgres have existed since MCP's early days. To connect one, you point your host app at the server, complete any login/authorization step, and you're done — the AI can now, say, search your Drive or query your database in plain language. No custom integration code on your part.

Most people's first MCP win is connecting an existing server, not writing one.
